We recently went on a long weekend family vacation to Kansas City. We had an absolute blast and couldn't believe how much fun there was to have so close to home! So if you are headed up to Kansas City with the kids; I highly recommend the places below:
1.) We spent our first two days at Great Wolf Lodge. Our kids had been begging to go here for awhile and why wouldn't they? This place has everything a kid dreams of; water park, fun magical games, arcade, arts & crafts, story time, fun characters walking around, and an ice cream shop.
With a 1 night stay at Great Wolf Lodge you get 2 days access to the water park; in my opinion two days was plenty of time; as it wears the little ones out! Each night there is story time at the clock tower where kids arrive in their jammies and enjoy a story read to them by an employee and joined by one of the Great Wolf characters. If you aren't interested in story time; this is a great chance to go on some of the water slides that tend to have longer lines; since the water park isn't as busy!
2.) On day three of our stay we stopped by both the Sea Life Aquarium & Legoland which are side by side.
Sea Life aquarium was a fun time for my older two children; however my youngest was mostly just interested in the fun stamp books they had along the way. My son especially enjoyed the time he was able to put his head inside of of the bubble tanks!
We went to Sea Life while waiting for our time slot at Legoland to arrive; the best part was at the end of your aquarium tour there is a play center where the kids can jump and play while you wait.
3.) Oh, Legoland, this was the highlight of the trip for my son. In fact this was really the only reason we went to Kansas City according to my son. If you have a lego fan in your house you will not be disappointed. What a fun place! We started with a room that explains how Lego's are made; it was interesting to learn how it is all done. Next we were on the shooting ride; this was the highlight of Legoland for my husband and I. Guests sit in a roller coaster type cab and are each given a gun to shoot targets as you ride through the different scenes. You can see your score as you shoot each target; unfortunately, my daughter held her gun backwards so her points were zero; however she still had a blast! (Pictures are not allowed in the area; but trust me; this was a BLAST)
After the shooting ride; you are free to walk around the many different rooms. There is yet another ride; where you pedal like a bicycle to raise your cart up and down. Or perhaps the kids would rather work off some energy in the huge play set filled with soft legos to build and destroy!
There is also a Lego Friends area that is filled with kitchen/bakery and karaoke.
Enjoy racing your own creation on the tracks!
We also took in a class at the Lego Masters; each kid made a penguin and was able to purchase it at the store for a discount with their Lego Masters certificate.
Lastly, we took in a 4D movie; which was pretty cool for all of us. We watched a movie that included rain/snow/wind and with each of these my kids would shriek with excitement.
4.) After finishing at Sea Life and Legoland; we headed across the street and had lunch at Fritz's. I had never heard of this restaurant before; however there was a huge train out front so I figured the kids would enjoy it. Little did I know that we were about to walk into what my kids still refer to as "The BEST food EVER!!" I'm not sure that it is really the food they loved (although they were good; burgers and fries) but the way the food was delivered. The waitress takes your drink orders but then you use the phone in the booth to call in your food order. Each kid is given a conductor hat and then. . . . the food is brought out by a train. There is a train that runs along the ceiling and when it drops your food; it drops onto a shelf that then drops from the ceiling to your table. My kids were amazed by this and honestly even watching the train deliver others food was all the entertainment they needed while waiting for our own.
5.) On our last day in Kansas City; we went to Union Station. They had a Grid Iron Lock exhibit; this exhibit was all about football and if you have a football fan; you should definitely check it out!
There were many things for the adults to learn more about the history of the game; but also a few interactive things for the kiddos to do.
Kids are able to try on the players helmets and listen to how players hear the plays and even kick their own field goal.
After the football exhibit it was time to check out Science City! There was SOOO much to do here! The kids and adults alike had an absolute blast! The kids love the playing and touching they are able to do with everything at Science City and I as their parent loved that they were learning!
After they ran, jumped, touched, built, and investigated everything they could it was time to go.
Want to know the best part about a long weekend in Kansas City? It's only a short drive home!
